Oklahoma's Accredited service officers are specially trained to provide expert assistance, free of charge, to veterans and their families. While the majority of a service officer’s work involves application for VA disability benefits, these compassionate professionals also provide information, referrals and resources on education, employment and business, death benefits and other important topics.
Section 38 CFR § 14.629
Requirements for accreditation of service organization representatives, agents, and attorneys.
• 38 CFR § 14.629(b) states that no individual may assist claimants in the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of VA claims unless accredited by VA’s Office of General Counsel (OGC), with limited exceptions (like one-time assistance under § 14.630, or family/unpaid assistance under § 14.631).
• 38 CFR § 14.628 defines what “representation” means and outlines that accredited representatives (Veteran Service Organization reps, attorneys, or claims agents) are the only ones authorized to provide representation before VA.
§ 14.629, backed up by the definitions in § 14.627–14.631.
👉 Only accredited VSOs, attorneys, or agents can officially submit and prosecute claims on behalf of veterans.
👉 Non-accredited individuals may help informally, but they cannot act as representatives of record unless allowed under the exceptions.
